Closeboard Fencing in Godalming

Closeboard, also written close board, is made in place rather than delivered as ready-made panels. Vertical feather edge boards are fixed to arris rails running between the posts, each board overlapping the next to form one continuous face.

That construction is what makes it last. There are no thin panel frames to twist in the wind, and a damaged board can be replaced on its own without dismantling a whole section.

Because it is built on site, closeboard follows sloping and uneven ground far better than panels, which is useful on plenty of gardens around Godalming and the villages on the greensand ridge. Heights are set to suit the boundary rather than fixed panel sizes.

We normally recommend concrete or pressure treated posts with gravel boards at the base to keep the timber out of wet ground, plus a capping rail to shed rain off the top of the boards.
